Administration General Information
Welcome to Helen Morgan School
We are an elementary school in Sparta, NJ for children in Grades 4 and 5.
We take great pride in maintaining a positive learning environment for both students and staff. We do this by building positive relationships with all students, creating meaningful and authentic learning experiences that allow all students to be successful, and building a strong partnership with our parents and community.
Our teachers are committed to providing classroom environments that value, foster and acknowledge not just the individual academic needs of all students but also their social and emotional growth as members of our community and this world.
Mr. Layman, Principal
The 2023-2024 school year will be Mr. Layman's tenth year as the Helen Morgan School principal. Prior to working in Sparta, he was an assistant principal in Westfield, NJ and a teacher in Wayne, NJ. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University and a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Pennsylvania. Outside of school, Mr. Layman enjoys reading (American History, crime thrillers, and adventure stories when given the choice of genres), writing (he needs to do more), exploring the great outdoors, following Philadelphia sports teams (he knows disappointment) and, above all each and every moment with his family.
One day, he hopes to climb to the top of the Grand Teton.
Mrs. Rivera, Assistant Principal
The 2023-2024 school year will be Mrs. Rivera's sixth year at Helen Morgan School, and her twenty-sixth year in education. She has served the Sparta School District for twelve years as a Language Arts Supervisor and an Assistant Principal. Prior to working in Sparta, she began her career on Long Island teaching regular education, special education, and became a Reading Specialist. She attended Dowling College where she earned a dual Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education and Literature and a dual Masters Degree in Literacy and Special Education. She attended the Foundation for Educational Administration for her Leadership Degree. Outside of school, Mrs. Rivera enjoys spending time with her family, reading, baking, decorating, and crafting. She resides in Roxbury with her husband, two children, and very large dog.
