French Honor Society

The French Honor Society (La Société Honoraire de Français) is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. 

The Sparta High School chapter provides a vehicle to focus on activities around the French language and Francophone literature and cultures. In addition, students can acquire leadership skills by serving as officers, directing the induction ceremony, or leading other chapter events.

Students in the Sparta chapter of the SHF/FHS are required to be available to tutor lower-grade students. Also, SHF/FHS inductees are required to complete community service, such as participation in the elementary school tutoring program. Participation in the induction ceremony is mandatory for the current members and the inductees.

Requirements for admission:
1. The student shall have a cumulative average of 3.0.
2. He/she shall maintain a 3.75 average in the language.
3. He/she shall have completed at least one and one-half years of language study at high school or equivalent and be enrolled in Level III, IV, or V.
4. He/she must demonstrate understanding and compliance with the school’s disciplinary policies (no truancy, cuts, or more than one grade of "U" per marking period).

In order to retain membership, the Society member must:
     a) be enrolled in the foreign language classes offered;
     b) maintain all academic, disciplinary, and service requirements;
     c) be available to serve as a peer tutor/student teacher;
     d) participate in community service activities and events organized by the French Honor Society.

Membership will be revoked for failure to maintain the requirements. These requirements are identical for all World Language Honor Societies at Sparta High School.

German Honor Society

The German Honor Society (Ehrenverbindung der Deutschen Sprache / Delta Epsilon Phi) is sponsored by AATG, the American Association of Teachers of German. The Sparta High School chapter provides a vehicle to focus on activities around the German language and culture of German-speaking countries. In addition, students can acquire leadership skills by serving as officers, directing the induction ceremony, or leading other chapter events, like the German Christmas Market concert. Students in the Sparta chapter of the GHS are required to be available to tutor lower-grade students. Also, GHS inductees are required to complete community service, such as participating in the elementary school tutoring program at HMS. Participation in the induction ceremony is mandatory for the current members and the inductees.

Math Honor Society

The Math Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, is an organization whose purpose is to stimulate interest in mathematics by providing public recognition of superior mathematical scholarship and promoting various mathematical activities. Students who are accepted will be required to complete math community service and attend meetings once a month. Some potential events include Sparta's annual Family Math Night, math competitions, and St. Jude's Mathathon. The interests generated by these activities help members to gain a greater understanding and enjoyment of mathematics.

Modern Music Masters (Tri-M)

The Sparta High School Chapter of the Tri-M National Music Honor Society recognizes students for outstanding scholarship, leadership, service character, and musical ability. Membership in the society is indicative that the student has attained, and is demonstrating and promoting, all of these qualities in the school and the community.

National Art Honor Society

The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) provides avenues for recognition of artistic talents and opportunities for leadership roles for students in the visual arts. It spotlights success and supports community work through volunteer opportunities that focus on art-related activities. Student membership will be available to juniors and seniors with nominations starting in sophomore year.

National English Honor Society

The purpose of the National English Honor Society is to provide national recognition to outstanding students at Sparta High School and to encourage an interest in, and appreciation for, English Language Arts. Student leaders will identify, plan, and coordinate various service projects, fundraising events, and field trips within the school community related to literacy. 

National English Honor Society hopes to offer students opportunities for leadership and community service. Additionally, the club seeks to increase student interest in the English discipline.

National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is an organization that recognizes juniors and seniors who exemplify high standards in the areas of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Students are invited to apply for selection if they achieve a cumulative GPA of 4.0 or higher. Members are selected by a faculty council who will review the candidates' application. Selected students are formally inducted at a ceremony held in the spring. NHS activities include tutoring, ushering for the fall drama and the spring musical, running events for local senior citizens and running the annual blood drive.

Rho Kappa (National Social Studies Honor Society)

The National Socieal Studies Honor Society, Rho Kappa, is an organization dedicated to promoting scholarship of social studies through the recognition of student achievement among the students at Sparta High School. This chapter will support its members in exploring and contributing to its local community through service and scholarship.

Russian Honor Society

SLAVA, the National High School Slavic Honor Society, was founded in December 1973, during the annual meeting of Dobro Slovo (The National Slavic Honor Society) with the help and encouragement of the American Association of Teachers of Slavic and East European Languages (AATSEEL). This honor society serves to recognize excellence and spark interest in the study of Slavic languages (i.e., Russian, Polish, Slovak, and Ukrainian) among high school students.  It also provides an incentive for scholarly interest in Slavic life and culture.

Science National Honor Society

Science National Honor Society is a prominent scientific organization that will engender a new group of young thinkers who will be the future of industry, research, and scientific exploration for America. All requirements to become a member are in the constitution. Applications will become available soon.

Juniors and Seniors:

Check your email in early September for information about applying.

Requirements

-Junior or Senior student at SHS who has and maintains an unweighted 3.0 grade point average.
-Must be enrolled in a science class for all four years of high school.
-Must have and maintain an 83 (B) or above in all AP and Honors Science courses. Must have and maintain a 90 (A-) or above in all CP Science courses/ Electives.
-Must have been enrolled in at least one honors or AP science course during their sophomore year. Must have been (or currently) enrolled in at least one honors or AP science course during their junior year. (Seniors only) Must be currently enrolled in at least one honors or AP science course during their senior year.
-Must have at least one AP science course on their transcript by the end of senior year.
 -A member must maintain behavior that is acceptable to the guidelines as outlined by the school’s code of conduct in the student handbook of their educational institution.
-A member must attend 1 meeting per month. You must attend at  least 70% of the meetings throughout the year.
-A member must complete 10 hours of community service with 4 hours being science related.
-Members must pay annual dues of $15.
