Choral Clubs

Sparta High School's co-curricular choral music program has a strong tradition for excellence and is designed to provide an atmosphere for the enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of all types of choral music. The Choral Clubs consist of four choirs in which students can be a member: Blue Nights (Men's Choir), Freshman Select Choir, Nightingales (Women's Evening Choir), and Shacapella (an acapella choir). Students will gain the knowledge of music terminology, learn to read music, be able to sight-sing, and have listening experiences in a variety of musical genres, styles, and historical periods that will enable them to become fine performers and culturally literate citizens.

If you or someone you know enjoys singing, please consider joining one or more of our co-curricular choral clubs. You will be glad you did!

Instrumental and Jazz Bands

Sparta High School's jazz bands mission is to promote the understanding and appreciation of jazz and its artistic performance on all levels and to advance the study of jazz/music in college and/or a lifetime of music enjoyment.

The program consists of two performing groups based on the level of student experience. Blues Sanction (Jazz Band Lab) is the "junior" band for less experienced students. Blues, Inc! (Jazz Band) is comprised of more advanced jazz players. Both groups are offered the opportunity to learn unique styles of jazz and also experiment in improvisation. Band students participate in performances for the school and local community, as well as yearly travel opportunities to jazz festivals and competitions.

We welcome interested music students to audition.

Chamber Music Club

The Chamber Music Club is open to students who play violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. Participants perform at school and various community events such as nursing homes, weddings, and holiday events. There is an end of year recital in June.

Marching Band/Color Guard

The SHS Marching Spartans, including color guard, have a long tradition of excellence and are considered one of the finest programs in Northern NJ. Members practice and prepare both music, color guard routines, and marching for many hours, beginning with rehearsals and a two week band camp in August. The hours of preparation lead to exciting performances at home football games and local parades. Most of our energy is focused on fall competitions at area high schools, culminating with various championship competitions.

Yearbook Club - Olympian

The Olympian Yearbook is a full-color record of Sparta High School student life throughout the year completely produced by students.  Students involved in yearbook are involved in all aspects of digital publishing including, but not limited to: design layout, writing, photography, proofreading, and editing.  In addition to the creative side of the club, members are taught marketing, publicity, and sales to fulfill the requirement of obtaining business ads to help sustain the publication. Yeaerbook involves cooperation, dedication, time management, and responsibility which are invaluable life lessons.

The four major functions of yearbook are:

  • to summarize the year's events through pictures and a theme;

  • to feature a variety of student activities with added emphasis on seniors;

  • to give worthwhile educational training to student staff members;

  • to build goodwill, giving a true, comprehensive picture of what the school is accomplishing in a given year.

If you are a writer, photographer, have a creative mind, or enjoy sales/marketing/publicity, join the yearbook staff!

Theater Clubs and Productions

Sparta High School theatre programs have an excellent reputation for the quality of their productions and the skill of its performers. The primary purpose of these performance clubs is to produce two full-length theatrical productions during each school year - the Fall Drama and Spring Musical. In addition, the clubs  provide theatrical exposure and experiences, as well as life-long lessons. Technical proficiencies learned include acting skills, speech and voice, movement, timing, and memorization. Life-long lessons include confidence, poise, communication skills, respect, teamwork, responsibility, dedication, fun and an aesthetic appreciation for the theater arts.

Many of the SHS students involved in our theater programs have gone on to successfully perform in college, community, and professional productions.
